The Fish Are Biting On The First Day Of The MA500

Due to a strong breeze, only 63 boats headed offshore Monday out of a field of 135 for the first fishing day of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000.  Some boats started out and turned around because of the sea conditions.  Those that stuck it out were rewarded by a pretty good Marlin bite.  Some of the boats releasing multiple fish were the "Miss Annie" with 5 releases; "Topless", "Krazy Salts", "Judge" and "Pumpin' Hard 58" with 4 releases each and "Oil Slick", "Viking 70" and "Lizanne" with 3 releases.  Susan McCart's "Reel Joy" had a very nice day releasing 2 Whites and a Blue.  However, top honors has to be reserved for Peter Cherasia's "Shark Byte".  Peter and crew led the day with 15 White Marlin Releases.......you definitely read that right......15 releases.  Congrats to all and good fishing for tomorrow.

Badger Creates Pre MA500 Excitement

It's Sunday, August 15th.  All the boats are in and the crews are carefully rigging baits in anticipation of the start of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 which is beginning on Monday.  The docks are alive with people all anxiously discussing what the next day may hold for them.  There are two slips empty on 'A' Dock waiting for a couple of slipholders to arrive back from a days fishing.  Many are waiting for their return hoping for a glimpse of what may be in store for them, and they are not disappointed.  Bob Barbaro's "Badger" turns into the basin sporting 9 White Marlin release flags filling the starboard side outrigger.  Wow! talk about causing a stir.  Bob and crew said they went 9 for 16 all told.  There was more excitement about a half hour later when Tom Kilareski's "Intuition" backed into their slip with 5 White Marlin releases.  Pretty Work Bob and Tom, you are doing Canyon Club proud.

Great Catches Leading Up To The Mid-Atlantic $500,000

Saturday August 14th saw a few brave boats head offshore to scout the waters prior to the start of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000.  Saturday's weather conditions were not ideal, but when the Marlin are biting, you have to get out on the water.  That is exactly what Dave Anderson's "Krazy Salt's", Bill and Jamie Diller's "Canyon Lady" and Jim and Sandy McCarthy's "Covert Mission" did, and it paid off.  "Covert Mission" returned to 'A' Dock flying 5 White Marlin flags, "Krazy Salt's" and "Canyon Lady" came in with 6 White Marlin flags.......EACH!  Three boats accounted for 17 releases, imagine what 150 boats are going to do on Monday, the first available fish day of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000!

Get Ready For MARLIN MONTH!

Canyon Club Marina's newest event, Marlin Month, is just around the corner. If you still haven't heard about this month long event (actually a little longer than a month) let me fill you in. Canyon Club Slipholders and a few select invitees will be competing to see who will be crowned as the top marlin boat. Everyone participating from August 16-September 26 will register their best 10 days of fishing during that time period. The boat with the most points wins. White Marlin releases are worth 100 points and Blue Marlin releases are worth 300 points. There is a very modest entry fee of $500 and it is winner take all. An informal Captains meeting will take place at Dick's home at the Canyon Club following the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 Captains meeting Sunday August 16th from about 5:30-7:00. Anyone interested in the event is invited to attend. Some of your neighbors that are already committed are; Lizanne, Badger, 37 Billfish and South Jersey Champion! This will be a fun event held during some of the best fishing of the season, so contact Monte or Dylan in the ship store to sign up.

The 'Judge' Does It Again

Marty Judge and Captain Blaine on the 'Judge' keep accumulating some impressive White Marlin release numbers. The crew headed offshore on Thursday, testing the waters prior to the upcoming Mid-Atlantic $500,000. I think the test was successful as they released 5 White Marlin and 1 Sailfish. The 'Judge' has been featured on these pages before, and it just goes to show you that if you put the time on the water, good things will happen. Also fishing on Thursday was the 'Liquidity', releasing 2 Whites.

Some Exciting Catches at Canyon Club

We had reports of some good catches this weekend.  The Hotz brothers on their "Deal Breaker" went offshore Friday and must have had a pretty busy day. We watched them back into their slip with 4 White Marlin and 1 Blue Marlin release flags flying off their rigger.  Tom Kilareski on his "intuition" also had an interesting week when, in addition to catching 3 White Marlin, also caught 2 Sailfish.  Must have been some really warm water!  Other boats releasing fish this weekend were the South Jersey Champion and the Gigabyte.  From reports right now, the best water seems to be the 500 fathom line outside the Wilmington and around the rock pile at the Poormans.  Some boats fishing those areas released 4 or 5 fish.
